# How to Let People Ask Your Website Questions

By [Colin Rooney](https://wonderworksdesign.net/authors/colin-rooney) · Published 29 October 2026 · 4 min read

**If your website runs on Cloudflare, you can let Cloudflare AI Search read every page, add a question box that answers only from those pages with links to them, and open the same pages to AI assistants through an MCP address. We did exactly this on our own website on 29 October 2026, in English and Bulgarian, and this is the full method, including what to switch off so nobody can run up your bill.**

## What is a question door, in plain words?

It is a box on your website where someone types a question, like how much a website costs or whether you deliver to their town, and gets a short answer written only from your own pages, with links to the pages it came from. It is not a chatbot that talks about anything: if your pages do not cover the question, it says so and points the person to you.

The same pages can also be opened to AI assistants through MCP, the common way assistants such as Claude connect to outside tools, so an assistant can look things up on your website directly.

## The steps

###

Create the index

AI Search can only read websites whose address is on your own Cloudflare account. If your site is somewhere else, moving the address to Cloudflare comes first. Your website also needs a sitemap, the list of all its pages, because that is what AI Search reads.

In the Cloudflare dashboard open **AI Search**, create an instance and give it your web address. It reads every page in your sitemap and keeps a searchable copy, then reads the site again on a schedule (ours is every six hours), so changes reach the answers the same day.

###

Leave things out

Use **path filters** to skip pages you never want quoted, and a **content selector** of `main` so it reads the main part of each page and not the menu and footer on every page. We left out our founder's personal opinion pieces, because they are his voice and not the business speaking.

###

Rules and model

The answers come from an AI model given only the matching parts of your pages, plus your rules. Ours say: answer only from our pages, never guess, give prices only exactly as written, never mention other companies' prices, never promise results, and answer in the asker's language, in Bulgarian addressing the person formally.

AI Search can use several models that run on Cloudflare without any other account. Test each one in every language your customers use, with your real questions. We tried three on day one: two would not run on our account, and `gpt-oss-120b` gave clear English and natural, formal Bulgarian, in about five seconds.

###

Build the box

Connect the index to your website's code (on Cloudflare Workers this is a few lines of settings), send the question with your rules, and show the answer with the pages it came from. Count questions if you want to learn from them, but you do not need to store them: we keep one number per day and language, and use it as a daily limit too.

###

Open it to AI

In the instance settings, turn on the **public endpoint** with **MCP** and **search** on and **chat completions** off, and set a rate limit. Write a clear tool description, because that is what an assistant reads to decide whether to use it. We also pass it through our own address, so assistants connect to wonderworksdesign.net/mcp.

## What are the mistakes to avoid?

- **Leaving public chat completions on.** That lets anyone use your account to write answers, on your bill. Keep it off and write answers only from your own box, with a daily limit.
- **Indexing everything.** Anything in your sitemap can end up quoted. Decide what should speak for the business before the first read, because pages already read stay until the next one.
- **Reading the menu on every page.** Without a content selector, every page repeats the same menu and footer and the answers get worse.
- **Testing in one language only.** A model that writes good English can still write stiff or wrong Bulgarian.
- **Trusting it blindly.** Ask it the questions your customers really ask, check every answer against your pages, and fix the page, not the rules, when something is unclear.

## Questions

### Does a question door help me get found on Google?

No, not directly. It is not a ranking signal. It helps the people already on your website find an answer, and it lets AI assistants look things up on your pages instead of guessing. What it does tell you, very quickly, is which questions your pages do not answer yet.

### What does it cost?

Cloudflare AI Search became generally available on 1 October 2026 and starts charging for use on 1 November 2026, with a monthly allowance included. Writing each answer is charged separately by Cloudflare per use. Check Cloudflare's pricing page for current rates, and set a daily limit either way.

### Can it say something wrong?

Yes, it can. It only reads your pages and is told never to guess, but an AI model can still word something badly. That is why every answer shows the pages it came from, so the person can check, and why you should test it with real questions before you put it on your website.

### Does it keep people's questions?

Only if you build it to. Ours keeps no questions and nothing about the person, just a daily count of answered and unanswered questions.

## See it working

Our own question door has been open since 29 October 2026. You can [try it in the experiment](https://wonderworksdesign.net/lab/question-door), where we report what we learn every month. If you would rather we set it up for you, we can build it into [your website](https://wonderworksdesign.net/services/web-design).
