Reddit and communities: audited numbers, contested everything else

A public company that files its numbers, so the audience is knowable. Everything after that is contested. The most quoted statistic in the category is a misreading of its own source, and Reddit's own Google traffic is described by Reddit as volatile.

Reddit is listed on the New York Stock Exchange as RDDT, so these are audited quarterly figures rather than marketing numbers. Reddit's own metric names are Daily Active Uniques (DAUq) and Weekly Active Uniques (WAUq).

Weekly uniques are roughly 3.9 times daily uniques. For anyone deciding whether a subreddit is worth the effort, weekly is the number that describes reach. 5

Three things the table says out loud

Most of Reddit is not signed in. 77.7 million of 130.3 million daily uniques, 59.6 percent, are logged out. Logged-out users are overwhelmingly people who arrived from a search engine or a link. That is the mechanism by which a business gets found on Reddit without anyone following anything. 5

Most of Reddit is not American. The US is 40.8 percent of daily uniques and grew 6 percent. International is 59.2 percent and grew 28 percent. Reddit does not break out the United Kingdom in any filing. Any UK Reddit user number in circulation did not come from Reddit. 5

Reddit is not an AI data company. The line containing data licensing is $43 million of $805 million, and it is growing at a third of the rate of advertising. The narrative that Reddit's value is its AI licensing deals is not what the accounts show. 5

"Reddit dominates AI citations." Six studies, six denominators.

Every one of these is real and every one measures something different. They are set out here side by side, with the denominator stated, and they are not reconciled because they cannot be.

The most repeated number in AI search is the wrong half of its own study.

"Reddit is 21 percent of Google AI Overviews" is everywhere. It comes from one study, and that study prints the answer next to it.

A "top ten only" denominator throws away the long tail, which on these platforms is most of the citations. It inflates every entry in the list. The number that describes how often Reddit appears when an AI answers a question is the left column. 11

And it does not hold still

Semrush tracked 230,000 prompts in weekly snapshots for thirteen weeks. Reddit's citation share on ChatGPT moved from roughly 60 percent in early August 2025 to roughly 10 percent by mid September 2025. That is a six-fold swing inside six weeks, from the same measurement method, on the same platform. 12

Reddit's own Google traffic, in Reddit's own words, three months apart.

Reddit is the largest single beneficiary of Google surfacing forum content. Here is what it told its own shareholders about that traffic in two consecutive quarters.

"Google algorithm change, these things are business as usual for us. There are always puts and takes. They almost never stand out on our traffic long term."

Both statements are Reddit's. They are ninety-one days apart. We are leaving them next to each other rather than deciding which one is the real position.

On AI Overviews specifically

On the same July 2026 call Huffman said of AI Overviews that "AI overviews has yet to make a similar level of positive impact," and that "visibility into referral traffic remains low" and "we expect it to probably continue to be volatile." The company being cited by the AI is saying the citation does not replace the click. 16

The Google money

The content licensing deal signed in February 2024 is reported everywhere at roughly $60 million a year. That figure has never appeared in a Reddit filing. It traces to a single Reuters exclusive citing unnamed sources, thirty months ago, and every repetition since leans on that one report. 17

In July 2026 the deal was reported to be in renewal talks, expiring in the first half of 2027, with Reddit seeking usage-based pricing instead of a flat fee. Asked directly, Huffman would not confirm renewal: "There is a world in which we do licensing, there are many ways the value can return to Reddit." 18

The 9 to 1 rule.

Post nine useful things for every one thing about yourself. It is quoted in almost every guide to Reddit marketing written this year. Here is what Reddit actually publishes.

The only self-promotion sentence Reddit currently publishes

"If your contributions to Reddit consist primarily of links to a business that you run, own, or otherwise benefit from, please be thoughtful about the frequency of posting, or consider advertising opportunities using our self-serve platform."

There is no ratio on that page. No nine to one, no one in ten, no threshold of any kind. The operative words are "primarily" and "frequency," and both are judgements, not arithmetic.

What we could check, and what we could not

Established. The ratio does not appear anywhere in Reddit's current, dated, maintained help centre guidance on spam, which was updated on 19 May 2026 and checked on 8 August 2026. 19

Not established. Whether the old community wiki page at reddit.com/wiki/selfpromotion still exists and still carries the ratio. Every request to reddit.com and redditinc.com from our research machine was refused at the network gateway with an HTTP 403 on 8 August 2026. We did not use a cache, an archive or a mirror to get round it, so we are telling you what we do not know rather than filling the gap.

Consequence. Reddit's site-wide Content Policy is not quoted anywhere in this chapter, because we could not read it at source. Everything quoted here is from the help centre, which is Reddit restating its own policy.

What Reddit actually polices, and who does the policing.

The site-wide rule is one thing. The subreddit you post in is another, and it is the one that will remove you.

Site-wide: the spam rule, verbatim list

The core rule is "Do not use Reddit for repeated or unsolicited mass engagement." Named violations include: 21

  • "Mass-posting repetitive content for the purpose of exposure or financial gain"
  • "Mass-tagging other redditors or sending large amounts of unsolicited chat or private messages"
  • "Repeatedly posting or sharing old content for the purpose of rapidly gaining karma"
  • "Using tools (e.g., bots, generative AI tools) that may break Reddit or facilitate the proliferation of spam"
  • "Leveraging multiple accounts to artificially inflate the subscriber count"

Note what is on that list and what is not. Repetition, volume, unsolicited contact and fake accounts are named. A link to your own business is not.

Subreddit level: no site-wide numbers exist

Moderators get post requirements, Crowd Control, Post Guidance and Automoderator. Crowd Control "collapses/filters comments and filters posts from redditors who aren't trusted members within your community yet." Reddit publishes no karma threshold and no account age minimum anywhere, because those are set per community at moderator discretion. There is no such thing as "the Reddit karma requirement." 22

The only rigorous number anyone has published

A peer-reviewed Cornell Tech study crawled 307,543 English-language subreddits with published rules. In November 2024, 1.2 percent of them had any rule about AI-generated content, rising to 17 percent among the largest one percent of subreddits, having more than doubled since July 2023. That data is 21 months old and the trend it found was doubling, so the 2026 figure is certainly higher and is unknown. We found no published dataset at all on how many subreddits restrict links, which is the question people actually ask. 23

Enforcement is moving from keywords to intent.

For a decade, getting past a subreddit's filters was a matter of avoiding the words it was watching for. That is changing, and it changes what "promotional" means in practice.

What Rules Hub does

Reddit is rolling out Rules Hub to moderators. It lets them "choose which rules should be automatically enforced" and "decide what happens when a rule is triggered (send to queue, filter, or remove)." Unlike Automoderator, which matches keywords, it uses large language models to judge "whether content matches a rule's intent," handling "nuance, natural language, and edge cases while preserving moderator control." 24

Moderators in the beta are not sold. One of them, quoted on 6 August 2026: "I'm in the Rules Hub beta, it doesn't even come close to doing what automod can." 24

If you run a giveaway or a competition

Reddit publishes rules for this, last updated 5 August 2026. You must make the official rules available to entrants. You must carry a liability release stating the promotion is "not sponsored by, endorsed by, or associated with Reddit." You may not use Reddit's name, logo or brand elements without authorisation. You may not target minors or support-related communities. 25

On lotteries the wording is flat: "Lotteries require a purchase (or similar consideration) for entry and involve a random draw of winners. Unless you have our explicit permission to do so, you may not conduct lotteries on or using Reddit." And if it goes wrong, "Reddit generally does not assist with promotions run by its users (including mods, business users, and customers)." 25

Reddit Pro, free, and unadvertised

Reddit's own business tooling is "a free suite of organic business tools to help business users discover, join, and contribute to Reddit's communities and conversations." Eligibility is a Reddit account, a safe-for-work setting, a verified email and self-identifying as a business. No karma minimum, no account age minimum and no geographic restriction is published. 26

Meanwhile Reddit built its own answer engine

Reddit's AI search, previously called Reddit Answers, "leverages generative AI to help find, synthesize, and deliver easy to understand answers from real posts and comments from redditors." It is "available worldwide in English, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Italian, French and German, and across all platforms." The help page dropped the beta label on 30 July 2026 while keeping the beta wording in its own address. 33

Usage: Reddit Answers went from 1 million to 6 million weekly users in a single quarter to July 2025, against 70 million weekly on-site searchers. Reddit has published no updated Answers figure since. In Q1 2026 it said search weekly uniques were "up 30% year-over-year" without giving the base. 34
