Prices in Bulgaria have risen by an average of 6.1% over a year, comparing October 2026 with October 2025. In the last month alone, compared with September, the increase is 1.3%. This is shown by NSI’s preliminary estimate, published on 3 November.

What has become most expensive?
It is important to distinguish the increase over the last month from the increase over a whole year.

Over the last month: October compared with September
The largest increases are in:
Clothing and footwear: 7.4%.
Recreation, sport and culture: 7%.
Education services: 2.5%.
[nova]

Over a year: October compared with October last year
According to the published breakdown based on NSI data, significant increases include:
Diesel: 57.8%.
Petrol: 37.6%.
Transport overall: 27.1%.
Veterinary services: 22%.
Road tolls: 19.2%.
Outpatient medical services: 18.9%.
Computer equipment repairs: 18%.
Hairdressing services: 14.9%.
Car repairs: 13.9%.
Dental services: 13.9%.
Food on average: 1.9%.

These figures show that annual price growth is much stronger for fuel and a range of services than for food as an overall group. This does not mean that every food product has risen by only 1.9%.
[trud]

What about prices a few years ago?
For the longer period, NSI’s latest final figures are for September 2026. They show cumulative price increases of:
12.9% compared with September 2023.
42.4% compared with September 2021.
[nsi]

This is why annual inflation of around 6% does not mean prices are only that much higher than five years ago: the current increase comes on top of earlier increases. People’s personal experience of rising prices depends on the share of their budget spent on food, fuel and services, categories with quite different increases.

nova

nsi
