You Can Finally See If AI Search Is Mentioning Your Business

Yes, you can now see whether AI search mentions your business. Google Search Console has a report that shows how often your pages appear inside AI Overviews and AI Mode, and which pages they are. Google launched it on 3 June 2026 and every website has had it since 31 August 2026.

At the start of June 2026, Google quietly added a report that shows whether your website is showing up inside its AI answers, the AI Overviews and AI Mode that now sit at the top of search. Before that you could not see it. You could watch your normal clicks fall and have no idea whether AI was putting you in front of people or leaving you out. Now you can check. If you run a business and you have wondered whether any of this AI search talk actually touches you, this is the update worth two minutes of your attention.

What actually changed

On 3 June 2026, Google launched new Search Generative AI performance reports inside Search Console, the free tool that shows how your site does on Google. For the first time, it shows how often your pages appeared inside AI features like AI Overviews and AI Mode and which pages those were, along with the countries and devices where people saw them. It counts appearances, not clicks, so it tells you whether you are being shown rather than whether anyone visited. Google started with a small set of sites, and since 31 August 2026 every website in the world has it, so if your site is in Search Console, the report is waiting for you.

Why this matters if you run a business

Search has quietly flipped. Similarweb's 2026 generative AI report, covered by TechCrunch on 27 July 2026, found Google's AI Overviews on 43% of searches, up from 15% a year earlier. SparkToro, working from Similarweb data for January to April 2026, found that 68% of Google searches in the US ended without a single click. So being named inside that AI answer, even when nobody clicks, has become its own kind of win. The trouble until June was that you had no way of knowing whether it was happening. This report is the first time you can see it. The goal is no longer only to rank. It is to be the source the AI quotes.

The bigger shift behind it

This sits on top of Google's May 2026 core update, which ran from 21 May to 2 June 2026. Google describes core updates as regular work to surface relevant, satisfying content, and in its guide to AI features, last updated on 10 July 2026, it spells out what that means now: first-hand experience and your own point of view, rather than a summary of what others have already said, which Google calls "commodity content". In plain terms, being a real, named source with something of your own to say is what wins now.

One thing you can do today

On 27 May 2026 Google brought Preferred Sources into AI Overviews and AI Mode. People can pick the sites they want to see more of in their search settings, and when one of those sites turns up in an AI answer, it is labelled so it stands out. Google says any website that publishes fresh content can be picked, and that people are twice as likely to click through to a Preferred Source. That turns a loyal audience into a direct visibility signal. The simple move is to tell your customers and followers they can add you as a preferred source, so they see more of you in their results.

What we would focus on

  • Write things only you can write, from real experience, with your name on them.
  • Answer the question plainly and early, so an AI can lift a clear answer from your page.
  • Keep your site fast and easy for machines to read.
  • Open the new report in Search Console, look at which pages are showing up in AI answers, and do more of what is working.
  • While you are in Search Console, look under Settings, then Search generative AI. Every site is included in Google's AI features unless someone chose to exclude it, and excluding it keeps your pages out of AI Overviews and AI Mode completely, so make sure nobody has.

We do this for the businesses we work with, so we are saying it from doing it rather than from theory. None of this means the sky is falling. It means the scoreboard changed, and for the first time you can see your score.

Questions

Can I see if AI search mentions my business?

Yes. Google Search Console has a Search Generative AI performance report that shows how often your pages appeared in Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, and which pages they were. Google launched it on 3 June 2026 and rolled it out to every website on 31 August 2026. It counts appearances, not clicks.

Do I need a separate AI or GEO strategy for Google?

Not for Google. In its guide to optimising for generative AI features, last updated on 10 July 2026, Google says that optimising for its AI search is still SEO, so you do not need a separate playbook for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Other tools like ChatGPT have their own quirks, but the foundation is the same.

Is SEO dead now that AI answers the search?

No. SEO is the foundation Google's AI answers are built on, because Google says its AI features are rooted in its core Search ranking and quality systems. The same things that helped you rank, clear and trustworthy pages that are genuinely useful, are what get you quoted in AI answers.

Will AI answers in Google kill my website traffic?

Clicks from Google may keep falling as people get their answer without leaving the results page: SparkToro found 68% of US Google searches ended without a click in early 2026. But being named and quoted in those AI answers still builds recognition and trust, and that is the thing to measure now, next to clicks.
