Your Google Business Profile Is Now Your Homepage For AI

Goes deeper: how local ranking works, with the sources

To show up in AI answers for a local search, fix your Google Business Profile first. Profound measured Google's own citation share inside Google AI Mode rising 8.4 times by 30 June 2026, almost entirely into profile cards.

What changed in AI search for local businesses?

Google's own surfaces now take most of the citations inside Google's AI answers. Profound measured Google's citation share within Google AI Mode rising 8.4 times between 15 April and 30 June 2026, almost entirely into Google Business Profile cards and product knowledge panels. Search Engine Land reported that finding on 15 July 2026.

The rise was concentrated in local and product queries, which is exactly the kind of question a customer asks about your business. Somebody typing "best bakery near me in Sofia" or "marketing agency in Blagoevgrad" into an AI assistant is asking a local question, and the material the assistant reaches for first is increasingly the profile card, not the website.

Google is also telling owners this directly. In August 2026 it published a bulletin to profile owners titled "Tips for Showing Up in AI Results". When the platform starts writing help documentation about a behaviour, the behaviour is not an experiment any more.

Does my Google Business Profile now matter more than my website?

For local and product questions, yes, on current evidence it does. The profile is what the AI answer displays and quotes. Your website still matters, because it is where the facts about you are written down and where a customer lands when they want detail, but it is no longer the first thing the machine reads.

The useful way to hold both is this: the profile is now your homepage for AI, and your website is the reference document that backs it up. When the two disagree, the assistant tends to repeat the profile, because the profile is structured, dated and verified in a way a page of prose is not. So an old phone number or a wrong closing time on your profile is not a small tidiness problem. It is the version of your business the machine believes.

What do I actually fix on the profile?

Fix the primary category, the service area, the address setting and the hours first, because those four fields decide which questions you are eligible for at all. Everything else on the profile is optimisation on top of eligibility.

Here is exactly how ours is configured, so you can see the decisions rather than a checklist. Our primary category is Marketing agency. We list eleven service areas, entered as cities, postcodes and one province, and deliberately no countries, because listing a country as a service area is a known suspension risk. Our location is set to no address with service areas only, because we do not receive customers at a premises and claiming a storefront we do not run would be a false statement on the profile. We also manage the Google Business Profile for Пекарна Като Едно Време in Sofia, which is the opposite case: a real bakery, a real counter, a real address, and hours that matter every single day.

Now the honest limit, because you should hear it from us before you hear it from our profile. Wonder Works Design has no Google reviews yet. Not one. We have done the configuration work and we can show you the working, but we are not a Google Business Profile success story, and reviews are the part we are still earning. Anyone in this trade who shows you a screenshot of somebody else's review count is selling you their client's proof, not their own.

What happened to Google Business Profile in July 2026?

Four changes landed in a single month, all reported by Search Engine Roundtable and tracked by Sterling Sky. Restrictions became additive on 3 July, meaning a second violation now stacks on the first rather than replacing it. On 8 July the appeals workflow began accepting evidence uploads inside the process itself.

Before that, the appeal was largely a form and a wait, and the documents that would have settled the question had nowhere to go. Being able to attach a utility bill, a lease, a signage photograph or a registration document inside the appeal changes what an appeal actually is.

The Message button also returned on 26 June, this time with an AI agent attached, which means a profile can now hold a conversation with a customer whether or not you are paying attention to it. If messaging is live on your profile, read what it says on your behalf before a customer does.

My profile was suspended, can I appeal now?

Yes, and the appeal is materially better than it was in June, because since 8 July you can upload evidence inside the workflow instead of asserting your case in a text box. Gather the documents that prove the business exists as described, then appeal once, properly.

The additive restriction change from 3 July is the reason to be careful rather than fast. A second violation now stacks on the first, so guessing at a fix, getting restricted again, and guessing again is a worse strategy in August 2026 than it was in June. Work out which policy you actually tripped before you touch anything. In our experience the usual culprits are a service area that names a country, a category that does not match what the business demonstrably does, or an address for a premises that does not receive customers.

My reviews vanished, is that a penalty?

Possibly not. There were repeated review display bugs on 3, 9, 22 and 23 July 2026, reported by Search Engine Roundtable, which means some disappearing reviews in that period were display faults rather than removals. Before you assume you were penalised, check whether the date matches a known bug.

The practical order is to note the date, count what is missing, check whether other local businesses reported the same thing on the same day, and wait a few days before escalating. A bug resolves itself. A removal does not, and treating a removal as a bug means you never find the cause, while treating a bug as a removal means you panic and change things that were fine.

If reviews genuinely went, the cause is usually on the collection side rather than the platform side, and we wrote up what the April 2026 rules actually permit in can you still ask customers for a Google review. If the profile itself is the piece you want handled properly alongside the rest of your presence, that sits inside the Marketing Partnership.
