TikTok: what the platform documents, and the numbers nobody can source
The only major platform that has published, in writing, that follower count is not a direct factor in what gets recommended. Also the platform whose documentation is hardest to date.

The 300 to 500 first viewers has no source
TikTok describes per-viewer ranking from "a large collection of eligible content." The circulating numbers do not even agree with each other. 4
-
Completion rate is not a TikTok metric
TikTok has never named a most important metric and has no metric called completion rate. It shows "watched the full video." 4
-
Posting daily is TikTok's own advice
Its guidance says "aim to post 1-4 times per day." The reach penalty for posting often has no source. 4
-
Search is the change worth acting on
Searches up 40 percent year on year, and one in four users starts searching within thirty seconds of opening the app. 1

How the For You feed picks.
TikTok publishes a five stage pipeline. It is worth reading carefully, because it is not the mechanic most people describe when they explain TikTok.
-
01
Selection
"Selecting a large number of videos that have passed our initial content moderation processes." 5 Only videos that pass moderation enter the pool at all.
-
02
Prediction
"Predictions estimate the likelihood you will interact" with each candidate. 5
-
03
Ranking
"The ranking process sorts videos by their prediction scores." 5
-
04
Similarity check
TikTok states its systems "won't recommend two videos in a row made by the same creator or with the same sound." 6
-
05
Recommendation rules
A final layer TikTok names but does not detail. 5
What TikTok does say about scale
"Selecting a large number of videos that have passed our initial content moderation processes."
Large, not small. It is the opposite framing to the one the industry repeats.

The signals, by surface.
TikTok lists three signal categories and applies them differently to four surfaces. This is the current help centre wording, which carries no date.
| Surface | User interactions | Content information | User information |
|---|---|---|---|
| For You | Content you like, share, comment on, and watch in full or skip. Accounts of followers that you follow back. | Sounds, hashtags, number of video views, and the country in which the content was published. | Device settings, language preference, location, time zone and day, device type. |
| Search | Your past search behaviour, and the content you like, share, comment on, watch in full or skip. | How well the content matches your search inquiry, hashtags, and the sound used. | Device settings, language preference, location. |
| LIVE | Your LIVE viewing and engagement history. | Hashtags, LIVE views, likes, Gifts sent, number of followers of that creator , and the country the LIVE is in. | Device settings, language preference, location. |
| Accounts | Accounts you follow and interact with. | Number of followers and views an account has , account location, likelihood you know another account. | Device settings, language preference, location. |
The one TikTok states plainly
"Neither follower count nor whether the account has had previous high-performing videos are direct factors in the recommendation system."
Read against the table, this is surface specific. Follower count is absent from the For You list and named in both the LIVE and account recommendation lists. Both statements are TikTok's, and both are live.
Weighting
"For most users, user interactions, which may include the time spent watching a video, are generally weighted more heavily than others." TikTok adds that "each of these factors can play a larger or smaller role," so no single signal is fixed. 7
The strongest weighting statement it has published: "A strong indicator of interest, such as whether a user finishes watching a longer video from beginning to end, would receive greater weight than a weak indicator, such as whether the video's viewer and creator are both in the same country." 8

What is ineligible for the For You feed.
TikTok publishes a dedicated standards page. As of 28 July 2026 it still carries the line "Last updated, March 2023," which makes it three years old and the current published position at the same time.
The four named themes
"We make ineligible for the FYF certain content that may not be appropriate for a broad audience related to: (1) Behavioral Health, (2) Sensitive and Mature Themes, (3) Integrity and Authenticity, and (4) Regulated Goods. We may also make some of this content harder to find in search."
The items a business account is most likely to hit
| Unoriginal content | "Reproduced or unoriginal content that is imported or uploaded without any new or creative edits, such as content with someone else's visible watermark or superimposed logo." 9 |
| Low quality | "Low quality content, such as extremely short clips and exclusively-GIF based videos." 9 |
| Fake engagement | "Content that tricks or manipulates others as a way to increase engagement metrics, such as like-for-like promises and false incentives for engaging with content." 9 |
| QR codes | Ineligible "unless there is a low risk of harm, such as in the context of e-commerce." 9 |
Interrupting clusters
Separately from ineligibility, TikTok describes throttling repetition of otherwise-allowed material: "Certain types of content may be fine if seen occasionally, but problematic if viewed in clusters. This type of content may be eligible for the FYF but, to protect our community, we will interrupt repetitive content patterns to ensure it is not viewed too often." 9
Where else it applies
TikTok states it "may also make some of this content harder to find in search." There is no separate published standards document for search, and no numeric threshold for search ineligibility anywhere on TikTok's site. 9
- TikTok Community Guidelines, For You feed Eligibility Standards . Page states "Last updated, March 2023." Retrieved 28 July 2026. 1st
One published threshold, and a page three years old.
The eligibility standards run to several hundred words of prohibited categories and contain exactly one number.
The only published numeric threshold
Age. "We also do not make eligible for the FYF any content from accounts of creators under the age of 16." 10
What is left undefined
There is no published threshold for how short is "extremely short," how much editing counts as a "new or creative edit," or how similar two videos have to be before one is treated as unoriginal. The page carries a key definitions section defining six other terms, covering body exposure, sexualised posing, conspiracy theories and tobacco products. None of them relate to originality or quality. 10
What ineligible does not mean
"Content that is ineligible for the FYF can still be discovered in other ways, such as through search tools or by following an account." And: "When a video does not get many views, it may be due to a lack of community engagement rather than being ineligible for the FYF."
The second sentence is TikTok telling people directly not to read a quiet video as a penalty. It is the single most useful line on the page and it is almost never quoted.

Length, and what TikTok has published about AI.
Two areas where the platform's own statements are frequently reported as the opposite of what they say.
Length is a signal, personalised
Video length is named as a signal. 12 But TikTok's user-facing explanation frames it per viewer: "This video is longer, and you seem to like longer videos." 13
There is no TikTok statement that longer videos get more distribution as a rule. The only weighting statement is about completion, not duration.
Limits: 10 minutes recorded in app, 60 minutes uploaded. 14
The one hard length gate
Monetisation, not reach. The Creator Rewards Program requires videos "at least one minute long," 10,000 followers, 100,000 video views in the last 30 days, and 1,000 For You feed views before a video earns. 15
TikTok names four factors behind payouts: originality, play duration, audience engagement and search value. It does not rank them. 16
AI content is not downranked
TikTok requires realistic AI content to be labelled, and says it has labelled over 1.3 billion videos. 17 The word AI appears nowhere in the For You feed ineligibility list. 18
Undisclosed realistic synthetic media is a removal matter, not a ranking one. The only feed effect TikTok has published is a viewer-side control: "the AIGC setting is intended to help people tailor the diverse range of content in their feed, rather than removing or replacing content in feeds entirely." 17

TikTok as a search engine.
TikTok has a separate ranking system for search, sells keyword-targeted ads against it, and since May 2026 sells brand-owned pages at the top of it. The figures below are TikTok's own.
What TikTok has published about search behaviour
| +40% | Growth in total searches year on year, stated June 2025 and again September 2025 19 , 20 |
| 86% | Of Gen Z internet users search on TikTok weekly 20 |
| 57% | Of users use TikTok's search function 21 |
| 38% | Start on a traditional search engine before turning to TikTok 20 |
| 34% | Begin on TikTok before switching to a traditional search engine 20 |
TikTok does not publish sample size, geography or methodology for the figures above. They come from its advertising blog, which is a sales channel. They are its own numbers about its own product.
What TikTok sells against search
Search Ads Campaign, keyword targeted, appearing on the search results page in the normal in-feed video format. TikTok describes them as sitting inside the organic results rather than replacing them: after clicking an ad a user "can continue scrolling through the search results in the order they appear on the page." 21 , 22
In May 2026 TikTok added Search Hubs, brand-owned pages placed at the top of search results. 23

What changed in 2025 and 2026.
Four announced changes. None of them alters the published ranking signals or the eligibility categories, which is itself the finding.
| Date | What TikTok announced | What it actually changes |
|---|---|---|
| 3 Jun 2025 | Manage Topics, and Smart Keyword Filters raised to 200 keywords | A viewer-side control over how often 10 or more topic categories appear. TikTok states it "won't eliminate any topics entirely." 24 This changes what a viewer sees, not how content is ranked. |
| 13 Sep 2025 | Updated Community Guidelines take effect | A moderation and clarity rewrite. The announcement does not use the words For You feed, recommend, eligible or search. TikTok states over 85 percent of removed content is identified by automation. 25 |
| 23 Jan 2026 | US divestiture closes. TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC | "The Joint Venture will retrain, test, and update the content recommendation algorithm on U.S. user data. The content recommendation algorithm will be secured in Oracle's U.S. cloud environment." 26 TikTok has published no detail on what retraining changes in practice. |
| 11 Feb 2026 | Local Feed, United States only | A separate home-screen tab with its own published ranking formula: "Posts in the Local Feed are shown to people based on location, the topic of the content, and when the content was posted." 27 No UK availability stated. |

The metrics, and the ones TikTok has never defined.
TikTok publishes precise definitions for advertising metrics and almost none for organic ones. The gap matters, because the organic numbers are the ones most people are looking at.
Defined, in TikTok's advertising documentation
| Video view | "Number of times your video started to play. For each video impression, plays are counted separately and replays are excluded ." 28 |
| 2 second view | "At least 2 seconds of play in an impression session. Replays are excluded." 28 |
| Views at 100% | "Played 100% of its length." TikTok measures completion in quartiles, not as a single rate. 28 |
| Average play time | "Average time your video was played per single video view, including any time spent replaying ." 28 |
| Reach | "Number of unique users who saw ads at least once." 29 |
Note the internal inconsistency in TikTok's own definitions: the view count excludes replays, and the average play time includes them.
Not defined anywhere TikTok publishes
| Organic view | No published definition. The advertising definition is not stated to apply. |
| Total play time | Shown in creator analytics. No definition published. |
| Retention rate | The word does not appear on any TikTok page checked. |
| Saves and favourites | Shown in analytics. No definition published. |
| Completion rate | Not a TikTok metric. TikTok shows "watched the full video," a percentage. 30 |

The measured numbers, and why they disagree.
Four publishers put TikTok engagement between 2.01 percent and 35.9 percent in the same year. They are not measuring the same thing, and one of them does not say what it is measuring.
| Publisher | Rate | Divided by | Sample |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quid 33 | 2.01% | Followers | 150 companies per industry, median |
| Dash Social 34 | 3.4% | Followers | Not stated |
| Socialinsider 35 | 3.85% | Views | 2m videos, 214,507 profiles |
| Dash Social 34 | 4.4% | Views | Not stated |
| Emplifi 36 | 27.6% | Not stated | "Thousands of brand accounts" |
The Emplifi figure is an order of magnitude above the rest and publishes no denominator. It is included here because it is widely quoted, and excluded from any use for the same reason it is quoted: nobody can say what it measures.
Direction of travel, also disputed
| Metricool | Views per post down 31.30%, reach down 28.73%, interactions down 31.17%. 2.3m posts, 92,000 accounts, Jan to Feb 2025 against Jan to Feb 2026. 37 |
| Socialinsider | Views down 23% overall, but median views per post rose for accounts above 50,000 followers and fell for accounts below. 35 |
| Dash Social | Views up 3% year on year. No sample stated. 34 |
In the same Metricool window, content volume rose: 72 percent more videos, nearly 140 percent more image and carousel posts. Total time watched fell 87 percent while full watch rate fell only 10 percent. 38

Length and frequency, measured.
Two questions with no primary answer, and datasets large enough to be worth reading even though none of them is controlled.
Length against performance
| Video length | Engagement rate, per view |
|---|---|
| 0 to 15 seconds | 5.90% |
| 15 to 30 seconds | 6.00% |
| 30 to 60 seconds | 4.20% |
Socialinsider, 6 million videos from brand profiles, January to June 2026. 39 The same study found median views peak elsewhere entirely: two minute videos pulled "over 11,000 median views" against roughly 1,000 for videos of 15 to 30 seconds.
Both figures come from one dataset and neither is wrong. Engagement rate here is divided by views, so a video with few views can post a high rate. The length that maximises the ratio is not the length that maximises the audience.
Posting frequency against views per post
| Posts per week | Median views | 90th percentile |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 489 | 3,722 |
| 2 to 5 | 506 | 6,983 |
| 6 to 10 | 487 | 10,092 |
| 11 or more | 459 | 14,401 |
Buffer, 11.4 million posts from more than 150,000 accounts, 8 October 2025. 40 The publisher's own headline says posting more often means more views per post. Its own median column falls as cadence rises. What the table shows is that posting more widens the upside tail. It does not lift the typical post.

Six claims checked against the source.
Five of the six have no primary source at all. That is a higher failure rate than any other platform in this document, and it is a consequence of TikTok publishing less than the others.
| The claim | Verdict | What the source actually says |
|---|---|---|
| TikTok shows a video to 300 to 500 people first, then widens | No source | Absent from every TikTok page checked. TikTok describes ranking from "a large collection of eligible content" per viewer. 42 The circulating figures do not agree with each other: 200 to 500, 300 to 500, and a 200 view threshold all appear, none sourced. |
| Completion rate is the most important metric | No source | TikTok has never named a most important metric. Its nearest statement is that finishing a longer video outweighs a weak signal such as shared geography. 43 Completion rate is not a TikTok metric at all. TikTok shows "watched the full video." 44 |
| Posting more than once a day hurts reach | Contradicted | TikTok's own guidance says "aim to post 1-4 times per day." 45 Buffer's 11.4 million post dataset shows median views falling from 506 to 459 across the whole cadence range, which is dilution, not a penalty. 46 |
| TikTok favours accounts that post daily | No source | Posting frequency appears in no TikTok signal list. TikTok states that "whether the account has had previous high-performing videos" is not a direct factor. 43 If account history is not an input, account posting habits being one has no published basis. |
| TikTok downranks AI-generated content | No source | The word AI does not appear in the For You feed ineligibility list. 47 TikTok requires disclosure, labels at scale, and is testing a viewer-side volume control. Undisclosed realistic synthetic media is removed, not demoted. 48 |
| Hashtags matter | Partly true | Hashtags are named as a content signal for both For You and Search. 44 TikTok has never quantified the effect. The only 2026 measurement found put hashtagged posts at about 5 percent more views and 10 percent more interactions, uncontrolled and correlational. 49 |
